What car battery replacement involves

A battery job usually starts with a test of the battery and the charging system. If the battery is weak it is replaced with one of the correct size and type for your car, and some cars need the new battery registered with the car's computer.

Signs you may need it

  • The engine cranks slowly or clicks when you turn the key
  • Dim lights or electrical glitches at start-up
  • A battery warning light
  • The battery is several years old or has a swollen case

What to ask the workshop

  • Whether the battery and alternator are tested first
  • Which battery size and type fits your car, including start-stop (EFB or AGM) types
  • Whether battery registration is needed for your model
  • Whether the old battery is taken away

Questions about car battery replacement

Can a flat battery be charged instead of replaced?

Sometimes. A test shows whether it holds charge. A battery that keeps going flat may also point to a charging or drain problem.

Do start-stop cars need a special battery?

Usually yes: EFB or AGM types. Fitting the wrong type can shorten its life.
