Car won't start: battery, starter or something else?
What you hear when you turn the key or press the start button tells you a lot. Slow cranking, a single click, or a normal crank that never catches each point to different problems.
General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.
Likely causes
Flat or old battery
Dim lights, slow cranking or rapid clicking usually mean the battery is weak. Batteries wear with age, and short trips or leaving something on can drain them.
Loose or corroded battery terminals
Poor contact at the terminals can act like a flat battery even when the battery is fine. Cleaning and tightening can help.
Failed starter motor
A single loud click, or a whirring sound with no engine turning, often points to the starter or its solenoid.
Alternator not charging
If a new or charged battery keeps going flat, the alternator may not be charging while you drive. A battery light on the dash is a clue.
Fuel or ignition problem
If the engine turns over normally but never starts, the cause may be fuel delivery, a sensor or the ignition system rather than the battery.
Key, immobiliser or electrical fault
A weak key fob battery or an immobiliser fault can stop some cars from starting even with a good battery.
What to tell the workshop
- What you hear: nothing, a click, slow cranking, or normal cranking.
- Whether the dashboard lights come on bright or dim.
- Whether a jump start worked.
- Age of the battery and whether the car sat unused or did short trips.
- Whether a battery or other warning light came on while driving.

Questions
Can a jump start tell me if it is the battery?
Often yes. If it starts with a jump but dies again soon after, the alternator or a battery drain is more likely than the battery alone.
Do I need a new battery or a new starter?
It depends on the symptoms, so the workshop should test before replacing anything.
