BMW and Mercedes-Benz servicing and repair
BMW and Mercedes-Benz cars are well served by independent workshops, provided the workshop knows the model and has the right diagnostic equipment. These notes cover what to ask and what tends to need attention.
General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.
What to know and ask
Servicing follows the car's own service indicator
Many of these cars show service messages based on use. Ask the workshop what they plan to do and which parts of the schedule they are covering.
Use the oil and parts the car calls for
These engines are particular about oil. Ask which oil specification they use and that it matches what the maker approves for your engine.
Cooling system parts age
Plastic cooling parts, hoses and water pumps on many continental cars wear with age and heat. A coolant leak or temperature warning should be checked early.
Suspension bushes and mounts
Rubber bushes and mounts wear over time and can cause knocks, vibration or a loose feel. An undercarriage inspection is worth asking for on older cars.
Oil leaks from gaskets and housings
A slow oil leak from a valve cover or filter housing gasket is a common finding on older engines. Ask them to find the source before replacing parts.
Electronics and coding
Many newer models need a scan tool for diagnosis, and some jobs, such as a battery change, may need the car's system to be told about it. Ask whether the workshop can do this.
What to tell the workshop
- Model, year and engine, and the chassis or model code if you know it.
- Service history and when it was last serviced.
- Warning messages on the dashboard.
- Whether you want genuine, OEM or other quality parts.
- Ask whether the workshop works on your model regularly.
Workshops customers mention for this
Matched from what customers mention on Google Maps, in our own words. This is not an endorsement, and a workshop has to inspect the car to confirm any cause.

Questions
Is an independent workshop okay for a BMW or Mercedes?
Many owners use independent workshops after the warranty ends. Ask what experience the workshop has with your model and what tools they use.
Do I need genuine parts?
It is your choice. Ask the workshop what options exist and what they recommend for each job.
