Engine warning light on

The engine warning light means the car has stored a fault. It can be minor, like a loose fuel cap, or something that needs attention soon. A scan reads the fault codes, but the code points to a system, not always to the broken part.

General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.

Likely causes

  1. Loose or faulty fuel cap

A cap that is not sealed can trigger an emissions fault. It is one of the simplest causes.

  2. Misfire from spark plugs or ignition coils

Worn plugs or a weak coil make the engine run roughly. A flashing light usually means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.

  3. Dirty or faulty sensors

Airflow (MAF), oxygen and other sensors feed the engine computer. A dirty or failing sensor can set a warning, sometimes fixed by cleaning.

  4. Carbon build-up in the throttle body or EGR

Deposits can cause rough idle and warnings. Cleaning the parts can solve it in some cases.

  5. Catalytic converter or exhaust faults

These often follow other faults, such as long-term misfires, and may show as a loss of power or poor fuel use.

  6. Vacuum leak

A cracked hose lets in extra air and upsets the fuel mix, causing rough running and a warning light.

What to tell the workshop

Do not wait if: A flashing light, a sudden loss of power, or a red oil pressure or temperature warning means you should stop driving and have it checked. A red oil pressure light means stop the engine at once.

Workshops customers mention for this

Matched from what customers mention on Google Maps, in our own words. This is not an endorsement, and a workshop has to inspect the car to confirm any cause.

Questions

Can I keep driving with the light on?

A steady light with the car driving normally can usually wait a short while for a check. A flashing light or loss of power should not be ignored.

Will the workshop just clear the code?

Clearing a code does not fix the cause and the light will come back. Ask what they found and what they did.
