Car aircon not cold
When the aircon is not as cold as it used to be, the cause is usually one of a handful of common faults. Some are simple, some need parts, and a gas top-up alone only helps if nothing is leaking.
General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.
Likely causes
Low refrigerant from a leak
Aircon gas does not get used up. If the level is low, there is a leak somewhere, often a hose joint, the condenser or a seal. Topping up without finding the leak means the cold fades again.
Blocked or dirty condenser
The condenser sits at the front of the car like a small radiator. If it is clogged with dirt or damaged, the system cannot shed heat and cools poorly, especially in traffic.
Compressor or clutch problem
The compressor drives the system. If it does not engage, or is worn, the air stays warm. You may hear a change in noise when the aircon switches on.
Weak airflow from a dirty cabin filter or blower
If cold air comes out but only weakly, a clogged cabin filter or a weak blower motor is a common reason.
Condenser fan or electrical faults
A fan that does not run, a faulty pressure switch, a relay or a fuse can stop the system from working properly, often only when the car is standing still.
What to tell the workshop
- Is the air warm, only cool, or cold but weak?
- Does it get worse in traffic or when idling?
- Do you hear the compressor switch on, or any unusual noise or smell?
- When was the aircon last serviced?
- Ask whether they will check for leaks, not only top up the gas.

Matched from what customers mention on Google Maps, in our own words. This is not an endorsement, and a workshop has to inspect the car to confirm any cause.

Questions
Why does my aircon get cold only when driving?
This can point to the condenser fan or airflow over the condenser. At speed, air passes through naturally; when standing, the fan has to do the work.
Is an aircon flush the same as a gas top-up?
No. A flush cleans the system and a top-up adds gas. Which one you need depends on what the workshop finds, so ask them to explain.
