Gearbox or CVT jerking, shuddering or slipping

Jerking, shuddering or a delay when you pull away can come from the gearbox, but not always. Engine problems and worn mounts can feel the same, so a proper check matters before anyone talks about replacing a gearbox.

General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.

Likely causes

  1. Old or low transmission fluid

The fluid cools and lubricates the gearbox. Old, burnt or low fluid is a common cause of rough shifting and shudder. Many makers list a fluid service interval in the manual.

  2. Worn belt, chain or clutches

A CVT uses a belt or chain and pulleys; a conventional automatic uses clutches. Wear here can cause shudder, slipping or a whining noise.

  3. Faulty solenoids or valve body

These control the fluid pressure that makes the gearbox shift. A fault can cause harsh or delayed shifts.

  4. Sensor, wiring or software issues

The gearbox computer relies on sensors. A fault can cause odd shifting, and a warning light may come on.

  5. Engine misfire or worn mounts

A misfiring engine or a worn engine or gearbox mount can feel like gearbox jerking. This is why the whole picture needs checking.

What to tell the workshop

Do not wait if: If the gearbox slips badly, will not move the car, or you see a fluid leak or smell burning, avoid driving it and have it checked.

Workshops customers mention for this

Matched from what customers mention on Google Maps, in our own words. This is not an endorsement, and a workshop has to inspect the car to confirm any cause.

Questions

Does every jerk mean a gearbox rebuild?

No. Fluid, a sensor or an engine problem can cause similar symptoms. Ask for the cheaper checks first, such as a scan and a fluid inspection.

Should I change CVT fluid?

Follow the maker's guidance for your model and ask the workshop which fluid is specified. CVTs are often fussy about the fluid used.
