Car overheating

An engine that runs too hot can be damaged quickly, so overheating is something to deal with straight away. The causes are usually found in the cooling system.

General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.

Likely causes

  1. Low coolant from a leak

A leaking hose, radiator, water pump or gasket lets coolant escape. If the level is low, the engine cannot shed its heat.

  2. Radiator fan or fan motor not working

In traffic, the fan pulls air through the radiator. If it fails, the engine can overheat when slow or stopped.

  3. Thermostat stuck closed

The thermostat controls coolant flow. If it sticks shut, the engine heats up and the top radiator hose may feel very hot while the bottom stays cool.

  4. Blocked radiator or faulty cap

Dirt or scale can restrict flow, and a weak radiator cap cannot hold the pressure the system needs.

  5. Water pump failure

If the pump stops circulating coolant, temperature rises. A leak or a noise from the pump area can be a clue.

  6. Head gasket problem

A failing gasket can push combustion gases into the coolant or let coolant mix with oil. It is more serious and needs prompt attention.

What to tell the workshop

Do not wait if: If the temperature gauge enters the red or a warning shows, pull over safely and switch off. Do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Do not keep driving, as it can cause expensive engine damage.

Questions

Can I top up with water?

In an emergency it may get you to a workshop, but the correct coolant mix protects the engine. Ask the workshop to check the level and find the leak.

Is overheating always the radiator?

No. The fan, thermostat, water pump or a leak can all cause it, which is why a pressure test and a fan check help.
