What to check before you take your car to a workshop

A few minutes of preparation makes a workshop visit faster and helps you get a clear answer and a fair quote. Use this list before you go and when you collect the car.

General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.

Before you go

  1. Note down the problem

Write down what you notice, when it happens and when it started. A short video of a noise or a photo of a warning light helps a lot.

  2. Know your car

Have your car make, model, year and mileage ready, and the date of the last service.

  3. Bring your records

Bring your service booklet or past invoices, and any warranty papers for earlier repairs.

  4. Book ahead

WhatsApp the workshop with your car details and the problem, and ask when they can look at it and how long it may take.

  5. Clear the car

Take out valuables and anything you need. Note the fuel level and mileage when you hand over the car.

When you drop off and collect the car

Do not drive to the workshop if: a red warning light is on, the car is overheating, the brakes feel wrong or fluid is leaking. Ask the workshop about towing instead.

Questions

Do I need an appointment?

Many workshops take walk-ins, but booking ahead by WhatsApp saves waiting time. Check the opening hours on the workshop page.

Should I wait at the workshop?

For a quick job you may be able to wait. For diagnosis or bigger repairs, ask how long it usually takes and whether you need to leave the car.

What if the problem comes back?

Contact the workshop with your invoice. Many workshops give a warranty on their work, so ask about it when you collect the car.
