Car battery dead: jump start, charge or replace?

A flat battery is one of the most common reasons a car will not start. Sometimes a jump start is enough, sometimes the battery is worn out, and sometimes the battery is fine but is not being charged.

General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.

What usually causes it

  1. Something left on

Headlights, cabin lights or a dashcam left running can drain the battery overnight. A jump start and a good drive usually recharges it.

  2. An old battery

Car batteries wear out with age and heat. If it is a few years old and keeps going weak, a battery test will show whether it needs replacing.

  3. Short trips only

Short, slow trips may not give the alternator enough time to recharge the battery, especially with the aircon and lights on.

  4. Charging problem

If a new or charged battery goes flat again, the alternator or a drive belt may not be charging it. A battery light on the dashboard is a clue.

  5. A slow drain when parked

A faulty accessory or wiring can drain the battery while the car is parked. A workshop can test for it.

What to tell the workshop or battery service

Do not wait if: you smell rotten eggs, see the battery swelling or leaking, or see smoke. Do not try to jump start it; keep away and call for help.

Questions

Is it safe to jump start my car myself?

It can be, if you follow the order in your owner's manual, use proper cables and connect to the right points. Some cars, including many hybrids, have their own rules, so check the manual first.

How do I know if the battery needs replacing?

Slow starts, dim lights and a battery that keeps going flat are common signs. A workshop or battery service can test it in a few minutes.

Can someone come to my car?

Some battery services and workshops can come to you. Check the workshop page or ask by WhatsApp.
