Car spray painting: touch-up, panel respray or full respray
Spray painting covers anything from one scratched panel to a whole new colour. Knowing which one you need helps you ask the right questions and compare workshops fairly.
General guide in plain words. It is not a diagnosis and gives no prices: only a workshop that inspects your car can say what is wrong.
The usual kinds of spray work
Touch-up
Small chips and light scratches can be touched up on the spot. It is quick but may still show up close.
Single panel respray
One panel, such as a bumper or door, is prepared and painted to match. Good colour matching and blending into the next panel make it hard to see.
Full respray
The whole car is painted, either in the same colour or a new one. It takes longer because panels and trims are removed and the surface is prepared.
Colour change and the rules
If you change your car's colour, check the current Land Transport Authority (LTA) rules on updating your vehicle's colour records before you go ahead.
Rims, trims and other parts
Many spray shops also paint rims, mirrors, grilles and trims. Ask what finish they use, such as gloss or matte.
What to tell the workshop
- Which panels need painting, with photos.
- Your car's colour name or paint code (often on a sticker in the door frame).
- Whether you want the same colour or a new one.
- Ask how they match the colour and whether they blend into the next panel.
- Ask how long the car needs to stay and whether the paint has a warranty.

Questions
How long does a respray take?
A small touch-up can be quick, while a panel or full respray takes longer because of preparation and drying. Ask the workshop for its usual time for your job.
Will a respray match my original paint?
Good workshops match the colour using the paint code and test it against the car. Ask to see the result in daylight before you collect the car.
Can I change my car colour in Singapore?
It is possible, but check the current LTA rules on recording a colour change before the work starts.
